This medication comes in tablets that are given by mouth (orally). Generic Name: Methimazole Common Brand Name: Tapazole Dose and Administration: This medication is given orally (by mouth). It is commonly given twice daily or every twelve hours although the exact dose and dosing frequency for your pet will be determined by your veterinarian. Always follow your veterinarians precise instructions regarding the use of Methimazole. If you do not understand the directions on the label, ask your veterinarian to explain them to you. The dose may be adjusted based on your pets response to treatment and based on thyroid monitoring. Once your pet starts Methimazole, he/she will likely need to remain on the medication for the rest of his/her life in order to control hyperthyroidism. The goal is to use the lowest amount of medication necessary to control the condition. Methimazole can be given with or without food. Allow free access to water while taking this medication. If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once. Uses: Methimazole is primarily used to control hyperthyroidism in cats which is a condition that causes the thyroid gland to produce a higher than normal amount of thyroid hormone. Methimazole helps to treat hyperthyroidism by decreasing the production of thyroid hormone which helps control the condition. Methimazole is less commonly used in dogs to protect the kidneys while receiving cisplatin which is an anti-cancer drug. Possible Side Effects: Side effects usually occur during the first three months of treatment. They may include loss of appetite, vomiting, and lethargy lethargy. These typically occur within the first two weeks of treatment and may eventually stop even with continuation of treatment. Less common side effects are yellowing of the gums, skin, or eyes (jaundice) which may signify liver problems. Itching of the face, scratching, or increased bleeding tendencies may occur. Treatment with may also unmask hidden kidney disease. Myasthenia gravis, a neuromuscular disease that severely weakens muscles and may cause difficulty swallowing, may occur but is rare.
