Solar winds coming to Earth
Researchers from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reveal that a giant hole in the Sun’s atmosphere emits hot gases that are sending powerful solar winds towards earth.
Geomagnetic storms create disturbances of earth’s magnetosphere a bubble of space around Earth that’s influenced by its magnetic field. While, the solar wind can interfere with this bubble as the energy transfers from the wind to the magnetosphere.
“While, the solar winds may build to a minor geomagnetic storm between 2 p.m. ET and 5 p.m. ET on Tuesday.”
Physicist Colin Forsyth from University College London says, the magnetosphere can capture some of the particles escaping from the sun, storing them and energy in the space around the Earth. When the fast solar wind from a coronal hole hits the Earth, it compresses the magnetosphere and adds even more energy into it. This latest space news can transform the magnetosphere fields.
Effects of the solar storm
The solar storm moving towards our planet at high speed. As per NASA, the winds moving with a speed of 375 miles per second. Scientists said, no need to worry about the solar winds. The Earth’s magnetic field will not allow the charged particles carried by the solar wind from reaching our planet.
According to scientists, the magnetic storms can cause problems with navigation, cell phones and satellite TV. While, this storm is relatively minor. The low-level geomagnetic storm may also cause weak power grid fluctuations.
While, geomagnetic storms can have strange effects on nature, including minor storms. People who live in a higher latitude region, areas like Maine or Michigan in the U.S., may catch a glimpse of the northern lights.
Forsyth said, these small solar storms occurring on 900 days every 11 years of the solar cycle.
