1631 John Winthrop is elected 1st Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony

John Winthrop (January 12, 1587/88–March 26, 1649) was an English Puritan legal advisor and one of the main figures in establishing the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the second significant settlement in New England following Plymouth Colony.
