Audeze Penrose Headphones review
Penrose headphones produce fantastic sound quality. For gamers, the gaming audio sounds punchy without over-delivered. Means you don’t need to blast the volume to hear subtle details in the game. Even though this Audeze Penrose Headset doesn’t have active noise cancellation, still you will get excellent sound quality. Because of its combined efforts from its closed-back design and thick ear pads that allow better than normal sound isolation.
The Audeze Penrose Headphones come with 100mm planar magnetic drivers. It is the same technology that we have witnessed in the Mobius 3 headset. The attached microphone used for producing broadcast-quality for a chat. With the help of its flexible boom construction that offers simple positional adjustments. It also has built-in noise filters capable of reducing up to 20dBof background noise. Thus players can hear voices with more clarity.
As per reports, the model which was sent for review is quite compatible with PS4 and PS5 consoles and also with PCs via its 2.4GHz wireless receiver. Reports suggest that it also works with the Nintendo Switch though it isn’t advertised yet. Penrose headphones clad in black with blue trim can be used for indicating which family of consoles it was designed for.
Audeze also makes an Xbox version named the Penrose X. It has green trim, and it has a unique receiver that has a two-position toggle switch. This makes it compatible with Microsoft’s proprietary wireless tech in one mode, Another mode with PC. Otherwise, it is the same hardware.
Audeze Penrose headphones come with Bluetooth 5.0 for connection to other devices, with support for SBC and AAC codecs. Also, both wireless and Bluetooth connections can be done simultaneously. Which will help users to customize the headset’s EQ settings in real-time using the Audeze HQ mobile and desktop app.
Apart from that, the headphones feature a 2.4GHz low-latency wireless connection. Which can transmit audio at high quality with minimum loss at a maximum range of 32m. And the wireless headset also features a USB dongle for connection to the upcoming consoles. Along with onboard controls like mute and microphone gain adjustment will also be compatible.
Audeze CEO Sankar Thiagasamudram stated that ” we are excited about finally offering gamers a true wireless planar headset. Without a doubt, Penrose headphones are a huge leap forward for wireless console gaming audio from Audeze. And we can’t wait for people to hear the news.”
Penrose headphones drawbacks based on reports
Along with all these great features Penrose headphones also come with a caution. These headphones from Audeze are not comfortable to wear for even short gaming sessions. Reports say that when these headphones are on your head you will feel squeezed the whole time. And for some users, it can be a deal-breaker. But people with smaller heads may feel comfortable wearing these headphones. But the Penrose headphone weighs nearly 320g which may feel a little bit heavy and uncomfortable.
However, other recent headphones like HyperX Cloud II Wireless also weigh 320g. But its weight well distributed over the headphone. You will barely notice that model headphones on your head even after some time has passed if you are having one. However, the HyperX Cloud II doesn’t have heavy 100mm, magnetic drivers, as this Audeze Penrose Headphone does. Which helps in producing better sound at the expense of heavier ear cups.
Coming to the controls, the layout design is not quite unintuitive, but some of the buttons don’t stand out enough when you are looking for them. Especially the volume and mic level dials. These integrated into the backside of the left ear cup and they are raised. Rather than being built flush into the ear cup. In fact, those raised hunks of plastic make thin dials tough enough to discern and adjust.
Battery life is good but not great. You will get around 10 hours of use per charge. Whereas other competitor headphones can also offer 30 or more hours per charge. At this price, the battery is not up to the mark.
Audeze Penrose headphones use Driver Technology. Its patented planar magnetic driver technology raises the standard for audio clarity and detail. Also, its Fluxor magnet array delivers double the power than the other Neodymium headphone drivers. Whereas Audeze Fazor waveguides and Uniforce voice coils reduce the distortion to near zero.
Penrose headphones come with a flexible and detachable broadcast-quality boom microphone. Which specially designed for enhanced chat and streaming. Also, a max SPL of more than 140dB and built-in noise filters can reduce upto 20dB of background sound. So players can communicate with greater confidence.
There are the details that you need to know about Audeze Penrose Headphones. They offer excellent sound quality and plenty of features but lack comfort. it’s a bit fatiguing to fit. However, these Penrose headphones are ideal devices for any gamers who are looking for a headset that can connect to multiple devices simultaneously. And these priced at $299.
